Professor Isabel Martinez
Dr. Martinez is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Latin American and Latina/o Studies at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. With nearly a decade of experience working with and researching unaccompanied Latin American minors, she developed this project in 2014 to provide academic and social support to the most recent wave of mostly Central American children and teenage migrants who are in removal proceedings. Working in conjunction with Safe Passage Project, she directs U-LAMP interns (all CUNY students) to work with the youth and their families and providing them a myriad of services ranging from assistance with school placement to interpretation in court and with attorneys. This project is also part of Dr. Martinez’s ongoing research project on unaccompanied immigrant minors in New York City including Mexican youths and more recently, individuals providing services to the most recent wave of immigrant minors.
